It is almost 2023.
I am about a week away from being 26 years old.
I am a GYM BRO.
Crazy, I know!
I can't tell you exactly how I became a frequent flyer at Planet Fitness but I can let you know that it feels just as comforting as laying in bed with my boo thang.
I walk out of every gym session feeling like I conquered a beast, feeling invincible, feeling sexy. The gym just makes me feel more like ME, it keeps me focused, it excites me whilst relaxing me. And, like any other healthy relationship, it teaches me a myriad of tough lessons.
Ya girl slipped and fell recently and was told not to do upper body lifting. Of course, me being me, I ignored that medical advice and decided to deadlift a max of 50 lbs.
This is how my back is currently doing:
Yes, I majorly overworked my body. I felt it in the gym too but I KEPT GOING.
Y'all reading the above statement:
Don't judge me y'all. I'm a Capricorn with a double Scorpio; I am impatient and crave strength and results ASAP. And, yes, I now FULLY am able to grasp how that is one of the qualities I need to work on and catch myself with before adding more than I can handle to my plate. I know better now.
Luckily, overworking my body has only caused me a lil muscle strain & soreness in my lower back. Even more lucky, I'm off to Physical Therapy and the place I go to always magically fixes all my pain.
My back might be in major pain at the moment but I personally feel great. Today and tommorow are my rest days & I feel no guilt about that at all. My body needs to chill and be potato-esque and that's 100% okay. My body probably won't be able to deadlift for another 2 to 3 months and I don't see a problem with that. I'll have to modify workouts and do weightless floor exercises or lift a lot lighter. Regardless, I am happy that I am alive, healthy, and fully functioning.
Another thing the gym has taught me is to be flexible with a routine. I always walk in with a set routine in mind & an order of how to do it but sometimes machines are taken and I'll have to do things in a different order or change some things. Surprisingly enough, that leaves zero impact on me walking out of an amazing gym session. It's made me question why I always stress when things shift & change outside of the gym. The truth is, filming a YouTube video tomorrow instead of today or hanging out with a co-worker next month instead of last week isn't going to change the outcome of the amazing life that I will have lived.
Don't get me wrong... it's still hard for me to deal with random things happening/changing. But now, after freaking out, I try my best to chill, destress, and have faith that things will get better. I try my best not to let it ruin my day & I am happy to say that the minor inconvenience I experienced at 2pm only bothered me for an hour instead of the rest of the day. PROGRESS!
Coming back to the gym and my aching back, I've come to rediscover that progress is progress no matter what direction it moves in or how small it is. Progress isn't linear but it is messy; why should life be any different?
Me @ Me after reading that last sentence:
Y'all I take back what I said in my last blog. I don't have a love/hate relationship with journaling/blogging. There is only love here because I have just now come to realize how much of a damn genius I am. I deserve a damn award.
Anyway.... next blog is dropping when I'm officially 26.
Stay tuned y'all! Add your emails to my newsletter so you can get notified anytime I drop a literary banger like the one you just read.
