Here’s the thing about starting off your 20s:
Once you arrive on that platform, family and friends think it’s okay to start bombarding you with all the heavy questions. Thanksgiving dinner is now a room full of reporters and Paparazzi’s....
”Kayci, what’s the plan after college?” “Kayci, how is acting really going to be able to help you pay bills?” “Kayci, have a boyfriend yet?” “Kayci, why don’t you go back to school for a Masters?“
I’m over here like:
DUDE CHILL OUT!
The point of me pointing out one of the annoyances attached to the decade of ages that is our 20s? It's so I can let you know that you need to try your best to not let any of it get to you. The reason why you are you bombarded with 777 questions isn't because your family and friends suddenly become vultures out to get you, it's because they care about you.
When it comes to friends, they're asking you heavy questions because they're just as lost. They're asking you for answers they most likely haven't found for themselves. And, in most cases, when you talk about the heavy stuff, you end up realizing something about your own dreams and goals.
When it comes to family, they're asking you the heavy questions to assure that you're on the right path. What they aren't telling you is that they were just as befuddled when they were in their 20s. They, too, made a shit-ton of mistakes and experienced a bucket-load of anxiety and stress. And, the reason they're interrogating you so hard is because they don't want you to experience the same things.
And, here's the kicker: we are destined to become those interrogators and reporters at the Thanksgiving table. It's just human nature to want better for the generations that follow us.
Ya'll processing the above information
To continue, the fun starts when you graduate college. What do I mean? When you graduate college, you're automatically catapulted into a strange land that you have no idea how to navigate. This is just naturally where our mindset goes, fearful of the unknown and by proxy, fearful of what lies ahead.
And when you're brain is constantly trapped in future mode.... that means you aren't fully being present in the here and now. That's how the mistakes happen. You'll take jobs that don't fully satisfy you in the hopes of saving up enough money to move out or start that beautiful family you keep visualizing. You'll date the wrong people because you keep believing the illusion that time is running out and since there's no one else knocking at the door, they have to be the one. Like NO... Honey, he ain't the one. If he has a drinking problem and broke up with his ex because of his inner guilt from cheating on her 7 billion times, he ain't the God Damn one (but more on that later).
Ya'll after reading that last sentence
I wasn't playing; you can make a lot of mistakes when you aren't being fully present. But I don't wanna just jump straight into the heavy stuff, I want to start from the beginning. I wanna give you the full picture so it feels like you live through the experiences with me.
So, starting next Monday, you'll be coming on that journey with me. For now, I leave you with the following:
